Cape May Lighthouse
After an amazing breakfast at our very own Mad Batter Restaurant, start your day at the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse. This fully restored historic site is absolutely worth a visit. Visitors can climb 199 steps to the top for a breathtaking and unparalleled view of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Then you can stop by the original Oil Storage Building which now houses a Museum Shop where you can learn about our rich maritime history.
Stroll the Washington Street Mall
Next is a place located in the heart of Cape May within the Victorian Historic District. The Washington Street Mall is a quaint outdoor shopping mall. It is a great place to spend an afternoon. The center street offers a quiet and peaceful red-bricked sidewalk that features fountains and wooden benches on which to relax and people-watch.
You can find a vintage 5 & 10, the iconic Salt Water Taffy Shop, and a cheese specialty shop. There is an amazing selection of nice restaurants, ice cream and fudge shops, art galleries, souvenir shops, and more along 6 city blocks.
Take A Carriage Tour
After some time shopping and eating at the mall, enjoy a relaxing carriage ride with the Cape May Carriage Company. All of their tours depart from their booth at Ocean and Washington Streets. Each tour takes a different route where you will enjoy stories and historic information provided by your driver. Beware! Many a proposal has happened in these carriages!
You can choose from a 15-minute, 30-minute, or 1-hour tour. They are generally offered in the evenings during the summer due to the heat. Their vis-a-vis carriage seats up to 4 adults and two small children. The Wagonette is the best choice for larger families and groups. You can book your tour online or in person at their booth.

The place to be on a summer evening is Sunset Beach. It may even be a local ordinance that every trip to Cape May must include a stop there! It is close to the SS Atlantus and the Cape May Lighthouse.
The evening hours draw a crowd as the sun’s parting brings an array of colors that just fill the sky. This beach truly offers one of the most beautiful sunsets in New Jersey. It is a perfect place to end a summer day. Don’t forget to keep your eye out for a “Cape May Diamond,” which are small pieces of quartz crystal found in the sand that you can polish to look like a real diamond.
