We absolutely love this time of year in Cape May! There is better place to get into the true spirit of Christmas! Our Victorian seaside town is totally transformed into a picturesque Dickens village for the holiday season. Locals and visitors alike enjoy trolley rides, wine tastings, house tours, and more. But, what about after Christmas? Are there still things to do and see? Well, yes there is! While the summer season is definitely a busy time here in Cape May, winter brings with it a whole other set of great things to enjoy. Top Winter Activities in Cape May
1) Wildwood Polar Bear Plunge – Happening January 11, 2020, come on over and take part in this fundraiser that benefits the Special Olympics New Jersey! This is one of those winter activities that will take some bravery! All plungers must raise at least $100 to participate but there are some amazing incentives being offered such as sweatshirts, portable speakers, varsity jackets, and more. It’s a great cause, a ton of fun, and a popular event for both locals and visitors to Cape May!
2) Dine around town – Cape May County is known for its variety of restaurants. Our various historic districts and seaside harbors offer some of the best dining in the region. Looking for seafood? It’s not just the summer season that brings amazing seafood dishes to local menus. Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grille, Harbor View Restaurant and our very own Mad Batter are great choices to find some cozy winter dining. The Mad Batter, considered the granddaddy of Cape May’s fine restaurants, is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also have Happy Hour daily from 3 – 6 PM and live music from 7 – 10pm nightly.
3) Take a romantic horse & carriage tour – One of the best ways to see the beauty of Cape May is by horse-drawn carriage. It will make you feel as though you stepped back in time as you ride around in an authentic vintage carriage. The Cape May Carriage Company offers 30-minute rides that show guests the various landmarks around town. You can purchase tickets on the corner of Ocean Street and Washington Street Mall. Rides are offered daily in December.
4) Explore the Doo Wop District – Did you know that Cape May is considered a birthplace of the Doo Wop music scene? If you are a fan of the 1950s era of music can we suggest taking a little tour of all the iconic Cape May Doo Wop landmarks.
5) Wine Tasting & Tours at Hawk Haven Winery – A favorite of ours not far from the Carroll Villa, Hawk Haven is a great local winery. Their tasting room is open daily, year-round for wine tastings and sales. The Classic Wine Tasting includes current releases; 4 whites, 3 reds, 1 rosé. We encourage guests to take the time for the winery tour. A guide will lead you through the winemaking process, discuss what makes each wine unique and how they achieve their unique flavors and aromas. At the end of the tour you’ll be treated to a selection of gourmet cheeses. The cost is $25 per person and not only includes the tour, wine tasting and cheese, but a special souvenir glass to take home as well.
